WALDEMAR CORDEIRO

Bits of the Planet

Bits of the Planet is an experimental online platform that explores the work of Waldemar Cordeiro (Rome 1925—São Paulo 1973), a leading Brazilian post-war artist and theorist.

Bits of the Planet brings into conversation Cordeiro’s figurative painting, geometric art, landscape architecture in São Paulo, prescient essays on the “algorithmic image”, and his pioneering computer art made on an IBM 360/44 in the late 1960s. The platform’s design and structure are informed by Cordeiro’s explorations of the then-emergent information society: decentralized communication; algorithms; the relations between the organic world and the digital; and both the democratic promise and the capitalist distortion of mass media. Incorporating artworks, documents, notes, drawings, and essays into its database, Bits of the Planet invites visitors to navigate through the many dimensions of the artist’s life and practice.
